Window adjustment: what you can do yourself and when you need a specialist

How to tell a window needs adjusting, what you can do yourself and when it is better to get an assessment.

A window that is hard to close, rubs against the frame or lets in a draught does not always need replacing. Often the problem is that the hardware has "shifted" over time and needs adjusting. This article explains how to recognise this situation, what you can do yourself and when it is better to get an assessment.

Why do windows need adjusting from time to time?

A window is a moving construction that is opened, closed and exposed to temperature changes for years. That is why:

The sash can sag slightly over time

Due to the hinges and its own weight.

Building settlement

Can change the position of the opening and the frame.

Temperature fluctuations

Affect the materials the window is made of.

Hardware wears

And starts working less precisely.

This is normal, and with proper adjustment the window works as intended again.

How to tell a window needs adjusting

Quick check: the paper test

Place a sheet of paper between the frame and the sash and close the window. Check in several places around the perimeter:

What can you do yourself?

1. Tighten a loose handle

If the handle is loose, there are usually two screws under its base. Turn the cover plate aside and carefully tighten the screws.

2. Clean and lubricate the hardware

Dust and dirt can make the mechanisms work harder. Clean the moving parts and lubricate them with a special hardware oil.

3. Adjust the closing pressure

Many windows have locking elements on the edge of the sash that can be turned to increase or reduce the sash pressure on the seal. In winter the pressure is often increased for better airtightness, and in summer it can be reduced. Adjust gradually and check the window after each change.

Not all windows have the same hardware, and adjustment options vary. If you are not sure how your window is built, it is better not to take risks and to contact a specialist.

What should be left to a specialist?

Some adjustments require precision and tools, and the wrong action can cause even bigger problems:

Changing the sash position

Adjusting hinges vertically and horizontally requires experience.

Adjusting heavy glazing or large windows

The weight is greater, and a mistake can damage the hardware.

Damaged hardware

If a part is broken or worn, it needs replacing, not adjusting.

An unclear problem

If you do not understand what exactly is wrong, it is better to get an assessment than to try several things in a row.

What not to do

Do not force or slam the window

If it does not close.

Do not turn adjustment elements all the way

Adjust in small steps.

Do not dismantle the hardware

Without experience.

Do not ignore the problem

If the window rubs, over time it damages the seal and the hardware.

When is adjustment not enough?

Adjustment helps when the problem is in the hardware or the sash position. But there are situations that call for other solutions:

Fogging between the glass panes

This shows the sealed glass unit has lost its airtightness, and it cannot be adjusted.

Worn seals

If the rubber has dried out or cracked, it needs replacing.

A deformed frame or sash

This may indicate more serious damage.

Recurring moisture and mould around the frame

This points to a problem adjustment will not solve.

The window is very old

And its thermal insulation no longer meets today's standards.

In such cases it is worth getting an assessment of the most sensible solution: replacing parts or replacing the windows.

Recommended adjustment routine

In autumn

Check that the windows close tightly before the heating season.

In spring

Inspect the windows after winter and check the hardware.

From time to time

Notice whether the window closes easily and there is no draught.
