When is the right time to replace your home windows?
Window replacement is often postponed - but some signs make it clear that waiting is no longer the best option.
Window replacement is often put off - 'we can manage another year', 'they still work'. But sometimes the signs that windows need replacing are clearly visible; we simply pay less attention to them than we should. Here is what to look for.
Six signs your windows need replacing
- You feel a draught - if you can feel air flowing near the windows even when they are closed, the seal or structure is no longer doing its job.
- Steamed-up or wet glass surfaces - condensation between the panes of a double-glazed unit means the sealed unit has lost its airtightness.
- Hard to open or close - if windows require effort to operate, or do not close fully, the frame or hardware may be deformed or worn.
- Mould or damp around the frame - this often points to poor insulation or condensation caused by inadequate thermal protection.
- Higher heating bills - if heating costs are rising while nothing else has changed, ageing windows are often a major source of heat loss.
- Windows are over 20-25 years old - even if there are no obvious problems, older windows rarely provide the insulation and energy efficiency modern standards require.
Why you shouldn't wait too long
The longer windows are left unchanged, the higher the hidden costs become - bigger heating bills, possible moisture damage in walls, and less comfort in everyday life. Over time, the cost of delaying replacement often exceeds the price of the windows themselves.
