You don't need to wait until heating bills have already risen to understand where your home is losing heat. This checklist will help you quickly assess the most common heat loss spots – so you know what to pay attention to when it's time to act.

1. Windows

• Hold your hand near the window frame while it's closed – a noticeable coolness points to a sealing problem.
• Inspect the glazing units – is there condensation or fogging between the panes (not on the surface)?
• Check whether the window closes fully without effort.

2. Doors

• Check the seal around the door perimeter – can you feel air movement when the door is closed?
• Touch the threshold – is it cooler than the floor inside the room?
• Check whether the door fits precisely into the frame without visible gaps.

3. Walls and corners

• Check corners near external walls – can you feel dampness or a musty, mouldy smell?
• Feel the walls around window and door frames – are there noticeable cold bridges?

4. Attic and roof

• Check whether attic insulation is even, without empty or thin spots.
• Look for any signs of water penetration in the roof structure.

5. Heating bills

• Compare heating bills from the last 2-3 years for the same period – are costs rising (excluding inflation) even though the house hasn't changed?

What to do with this information?

If you checked several points, it doesn't mean everything needs to be replaced at once – but it's a good starting point for a conversation with a specialist, to understand where you can get the biggest initial effect for the smallest investment.
