# Aluminium facade system: when to choose a facade instead of standard windows

Large glass areas, non-standard shapes and planning steps for architects and builders.

In modern architecture, glass surfaces often become the centrepiece of a building: a double-height living room, corner glazing, triangular or sloped glass areas. In such cases standard windows are not always the best solution, and the project has to choose between separate windows and an aluminium facade system. This article explains how to tell these situations apart and what deserves attention during planning.

## What is an aluminium facade system?

A facade system is a structure of aluminium profiles in which glass panels are fixed into a single frame. Unlike a window, which is installed in an opening, a facade system often forms the outer surface of the building or part of it. This allows larger, continuous glass areas with minimal, expressive frames.

## When is a facade system worth choosing?

### Large, continuous glass areas

If the project includes very large glass panels covering a significant part of the facade, a facade system organises them in one structure instead of splitting them into separate windows.

### Non-standard shapes

Triangular, trapezoidal, sloped or other special glass areas usually require a custom solution. We used this approach in one of our private house projects: an aluminium facade system was chosen for a large triangular glass area.

### Multi-storey glazing

In double-height rooms or glazed entrance portals, a continuous glass area creates a unified look without horizontal transitions between floors.

### Corner and entrance areas

Glass corners and entrance areas are often solved with a facade system because it gives clean lines and a higher share of glass.

### A clear design concept

If the design relies on slim frames and maximum glass surface, a facade system often achieves it more precisely than standard window profiles.

## How does it differ from windows?

- Aspect
- Standard window
- Aluminium facade system

- Installation
- In an opening, within the wall structure
- Forms the outer surface of the building or part of it

- Sizes
- Limited by standard window sizes
- Larger, continuous areas

- Shapes
- Mainly rectangular
- Non-standard shapes also possible

- Planning
- Relatively simple
- Requires early coordination with the design

- Opening sections
- The window itself opens
- Opening sections are integrated as needed

## What to consider at the planning stage?

### Early coordination

A facade system is tied to the building structure, so it is worth coordinating at sketch or preliminary design stage, not after the openings are built.

### Loads and structure

Glass weight, wind loads and fixing points must be agreed with the project's structural engineer. With larger glass areas this is an essential part of planning.

### Thermal insulation and glazing

Aluminium systems are usually made with a thermal break to provide the required insulation. The glazing type (number of chambers, U-value, sound and solar protection) is specified according to project requirements.

### Opening sections and ventilation

If ventilation through the facade is planned, the number of opening elements and their opening type should be stated in the specification.

### Colour and finish

Aluminium profiles come in various colours and finishes and can be matched with other facade elements. If the project also has windows or doors, a unified colour solution is worth choosing.

### Installation and logistics

Transporting, lifting and installing large glass panels takes planning. Site access and installation sequence must be considered.

### Lead times

Production of aluminium structures takes 6-8 weeks for standard solutions. For facade systems and non-standard structures the lead time is confirmed individually per project.

## What is needed to prepare a quote?

For an accurate quote, the following materials are helpful:

- facade drawings or sketches with dimensions
- glazing requirements (insulation, sound, safety)
- preferred colour and finish
- number of opening sections and their opening type
- project schedule and site location

If the project is still at concept stage, we can also review sketches and help clarify what is technically feasible.

## How we work on facade projects

We offer one point of contact for the whole project: from the initial consultation and on-site measurement to delivery, installation and aftercare. Installation is carried out by our own team, and after completion we do a 30-day comfort check and an inspection after 180 days.
